In October 2005, under the guidance of Ken Lynch, a group of young people met together to discuss the possible renovation of the old skatepark as it had fallen into disrepair after more than 10 years of constant use. A new skatepark would be much safer, and a modern design would make better use of the space available. This would create a safe environment for youngsters to practice their sport and to meet and socialise with likeminded people.

Old skatepark

The group of young people became the committee members of BDSWA (Bedford and District Skateboard and Wheels Association) which was first formed over a decade ago in order to build the original skatepark. The majority of the association members are keen skaters, inliners and bikers from local schools, and the committee is currently made up of half a dozen or so teenagers, along with two adults.

Old skatepark

Over a period of almost three years, this group, largely down to the tireless work of secretary and treasurer Maggie Whiteley, managed to raise the funds needed for the renovation. Gravity Engineering was chosen as the construction company and they worked closely with BDSWA to create the current design.

Poor construction

BDSWA are justifiably proud of the project after three years of hard work.
